Ask the experts with Nick Haynes

Ask The Experts
with
Nick Haynes – Stylist/Colorist/Men’s Hairstyles

You’re one of the newest stylists at What’s New. How did you get started?

Of course, I grew up surrounded by two great hair stylists at home. Originally I thought I wanted to do something different, but I began to start thinking seriously about hair in about 2007. I went to school, and I joined What’s New in 2009 as a stylist.

What made you look more seriously at styling?

It is a real personal experience for me and for clients. Aside from say, a doctor, it’s the only other profession I can think of where clients allow us to physically get close to them. Clients let us into their world for that time they are here, and you concentrate on them, what they want, and the expertise you provide. It’s fun to see clients light up when you’ve created a style on them that looks great.

You’ve quickly developed a clientele in a short time, would you say?

Yes, it has been very gratifying and has developed over time via the Internet and word-of-mouth. Right now of my female clientele, about 80 per cent of them have long hair. Long hair provides the range of everything from updos to color to the variety that long hair offers women.

For styling, how do men differ from women?

Men are much more particular than women. They arrive with a very specific idea of the overall look they want and the hairstyle they want.

So men come in with more specific ideas about their hair. But what if it’s not right for them?

That’s where we talk about it. I listen to what they want, but if they want something that their hair simply will not do through the cut, the products or both, I make my recommendations. Together we come up with a style that meets that client’s needs. They pay for my expertise and appreciate a style that looks good on them and that their hair will do, and that they can do at home.

What is popular right now among men?

Right now, I do a lot of looks that are messy and more aggressive on top. The top is longer, with short sides that are what we call “disconnected.” That cutting technique means that we blend it from the bottom up vs. the traditional way of blending from the top down.

What role do products play with men, and do you have to educate men more?

Products play a big role in achieving the right look whether it’s men or women. Men want a great look and quick, easy products to work with to achieve that look.

What is another difference in men’s styling that you’ve seen?

For men, I think it’s more about the overall experience. Women grew up coming to hair salons and are used to it. Most men grew up going to the barbershop for a quick cut. Due to that, many men tell me that they’d never had their hair shampooed by someone else – and they really like it. Men are not as used to pampering, so the time they spend here is truly a time they enjoy relaxing and spending on themselves.

What is the biggest challenge in working with men and men’s styles?

I think the biggest challenge is that some men feel uncomfortable working with products or certain methods – that they think it’s not “manly.” As I’ve said before, the easier the product, the better. But here’s an example where men will go that extra mile to achieve the look they want: I use a flat iron on some men’s hair to achieve a look they want. Although they may be uncomfortable doing this at home at first, once they try, they see how easy it to do themselves.

Lash Extensions

You’re already well known throughout the area for your hair extensions – and now you’ve added lash extensions to your offerings.  Is this new?

Yes, I am now certified in lash extensions, which is an exciting new service for clients who may want to enhance their lashes in a subtle, natural-looking way.  Unlike false eyelashes, lash extensions are for long-term, daily wear.

How do lash extensions work?

We apply a medical-grade adhesion and we do it “lash for lash.”  That is, we adhere one lash to one of your own natural lashes.  We tailor lash extensions for each client’s needs.  For example, a client can choose to go full, thick, long, curly and anything in between.  It is for everyday wear, and most people will think they are your own natural lashes.

What are the benefits?

There are multiple benefits.  First of all, you don’t need to wear mascara with lash extensions.  Lash extensions, unlike false eyelashes, are weightless and designed for everyday wear.  Also, unlike hair extensions, there is no need for “removing” lash extensions.  The extensions shed as your natural lashes normally do.  A client does not feel they are wearing them because they are weightless, nor can people tell if you have lash extensions.

Is there maintenance involved with lash extensions?

Yes.  Our bodies naturally shed eyelashes at a normal rate and because this is “lash for lash,” this is how you will shed lash extensions.  We recommend maintenance every 3 – 4 weeks, depending upon how you naturally shed your own lashes.

Are there clients that are not suited for lash extensions?

Yes.  People with latex allergies are not good candidates for lash extensions.  Also, people with thyroid problems tend to generally shed hair, body hair, and lashes at a faster rate.

What is the difference between false eyelashes and lash extensions?

Lash extensions are weightless and are designed for longer wear and everyday wear.  They are subtle:  unless you tell people, no one knows you’re wearing lash extensions.  False eyelashes are for shorter-term wear and tend to be heavy, thus your natural eyelashes fall out sooner due to weight.  Also, false eyelashes are generally obvious:  you can feel that you’re wearing false eyelashes, and most people can tell.  False lashes, unlike lash extensions, are removable.

Changing the subject, you also provide false eyelash services?

Yes.  We offer Eva, the most natural looking of all false eyelashes on the market.  They are strictly for special occasions and are not worn long-term.  As with other false eyelashes, they must be removed and do have some weight.  The client can feel they are wearing them, and others can tell you are wearing false eyelashes. Eva lashes can last up to 2 weeks without maintenance, but the downside is that clients can’t sleep on their sides or stomachs – back sleeping only when wearing Eva lashes.

What makes Eva lashes more natural looking?

They are applied as sets of three, instead of one long band of false eyelashes.  Eva lashes are the best, most natural-looking false eyelashes on the market today.

Christmas Trees at Community Care of Rutherford County

What's New The Salon's Christmas Tradition

Once again our staff has participated in decorating a tree at Community Care of Rutherford County. This is an event that we have participated in for several years and there are so many levels of enjoyment and fulfillment to it.
Businesses and organizations are invited to put up a tree and fully decorate it. There are usually about 15 different trees, all decorated in a unique fashion. Some are old fashioned, some high fashion, some are whimsical, and some are just plain fun.
After all the trees are decorated, the silent bidding begins. Someone will be able to purchase a tree with all the trimmings for a great price and a great cause.
The money raised goes to a shopping spree for the residents to purchase toys to then be donated to the Toys for Tots program.
In addition to those great causes, the trees and the excitement bring joy and nostalgia to the residents, who enjoy watching the decorating and the visitors.
Please take the time this year to visit Community Care of Rutherford County, see the trees, bid on one or two, and see what an awesome program this is.
