Ask the Experts with Tammy Young about Derma-planing

Ask The Experts with
Tammy Young, Licensed Aesthecian
Dermaplaning

What is derma-planing?

Dermaplaning is the controlled scraping of skin that efficiently removes the layer of dead skin and what we commonly call the fine “peach fuzz” on the face.

Is dermaplaning a new procedure?

No, but up until now, it has been offered more commonly on the West Coast and major cities. In the past, it has been commonly used among Hollywood celebrities and Country Music stars.

How does it differ from microdermabrasion or peels?

Microdermabrasion is an abrasive, rapid exfoliation that sands off 3 layers of dead or damaged skin to reveal an undamaged layer of skin underneath. Whereas with dermaplaning, it is not abrasive, there are no products involved with the procedure, and there is no discomfort or pain. There is no recovery time.

How does it work and what are the benefits?

We use a dermaplaning device to remove the dead skin cells and fine facial hair to reveal healthy, undamaged skin. Because there are no products involved, there is no risk of allergies. It provides the client immediate gratification – you can apply makeup immediately afterward. It’s great for special occasions where you want to look your best.

Are there clients that especially benefit from dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is very gentle and very efficient. Dermaplaning works great with clients with sensitive skin who tend to be allergic to certain products. It is also very beneficial for those clients who naturally have a lot of fine facial hair.

Are there clients that would not be suitable for dermaplaning?

People who are going through cancer treatment or have an uncontrolled bleeding problem are not dermaplaning candidates. A client with active acne, cycstic acne or those who have taken Accutane within the past year are also not good candidates. For all of these conditions or situations, there are other treatments that would be more beneficial for these clients.

What do clients need to do prior to dermaplaning?

The only “pretreatment” we require is that if a client is on a Retin-A regiment, we ask that you do not use Retin-A for several days before dermaplaning. Other than that, there is none.

After dermaplaning treatments, is there a recovery time or special instructions to do at home?

There is no recovery time – results are immediate. However, because we have eliminated the dead skin cells, new, undamaged skin is revealed, we recommend wearing sunscreen for a couple of days afterward. Obviously, no tanning bed immediately afterward. Also, we provide an ointment afterwards to wear to help keep your skin baby-soft. Other than this, you can apply makeup immediately afterwards.

Is dermaplaning painful or uncomfortable?

No

How long does the dermaplaning procedure take?

The dermaplaning procedure itself takes only 20 – 30 minutes.

Can I combine dermaplaning with facials?

Yes. In fact, we offer a DermaplanePro Facial that includes a natural enzyme peel to get rid of any additional dead skin after dermaplaning. It also includes extractions, if necessary, and a moisturizing mask. If a monthly skin treatment is already part of your regiment, we can certainly add dermaplaning to a client’s regular routine.

How often can you get dermaplaning treatments?

Dermaplaning is so gentle you could actually do it weekly. However, we recommend once a month for eliminating damaged skin. For the facial hair aspect alone, dermaplaning will last from 6 – 8 weeks.

Christmas Trees at Community Care of Rutherford County

What's New The Salon's Christmas Tradition

Once again our staff has participated in decorating a tree at Community Care of Rutherford County. This is an event that we have participated in for several years and there are so many levels of enjoyment and fulfillment to it.
Businesses and organizations are invited to put up a tree and fully decorate it. There are usually about 15 different trees, all decorated in a unique fashion. Some are old fashioned, some high fashion, some are whimsical, and some are just plain fun.
After all the trees are decorated, the silent bidding begins. Someone will be able to purchase a tree with all the trimmings for a great price and a great cause.
The money raised goes to a shopping spree for the residents to purchase toys to then be donated to the Toys for Tots program.
In addition to those great causes, the trees and the excitement bring joy and nostalgia to the residents, who enjoy watching the decorating and the visitors.
Please take the time this year to visit Community Care of Rutherford County, see the trees, bid on one or two, and see what an awesome program this is.

Ask the Experts: Spray Tan

Ask The Experts

Spray Tanning

Spray Tanning has become more and more popular.  Why is that?

It is really the only safe tan you can have.  Sun exposure, from either being outdoors or from a tanning bed, causes premature aging of the skin, different kinds of skin cancer, and a variety of other skin-related problems.  Plus, spray tanning products have dramatically improved over the years and has become a part of modern culture.  Those beautiful Hollywood stars have spray tans, and are not the result of hours in the sun laying by the pool.

How is the spray tan you use here different from the do-it-yourself home tanning products?

The home tanning products contain a lot of chemicals and it’s hard to get on evenly – it tends to streak and have a unique smell.  And depending on your skin tone, it may not look like a natural tan.

The product we use, Sun FX, is the same one they use on “Dancing with the Stars.”  It has 75% natural ingredients and produces a natural, brown tone – not the orangey tones you sometimes get with the at home self-tanning products.  We have 3 shades:  light, medium and dark and it is odorless.  We do what we call a “Rapid Tan,” which takes about 15 minutes to apply.  It sets in 2 hours and you can shower after 3 hours.

How do your clients prepare for a “Rapid Tan?”

We recommend you take a shower the night before your session and exfoliate with a loofah or exfoliating cloth.  Pay extra attention to rough areas like elbows, feet, or knees.  Also, do any shaving the night before.  After your shower, do not use any moisturizing lotion.  This preparation will help ensure a successful, streakless application of your tan.

What do clients wear to the tanning session?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing to come and go from the salon – nothing tight.  Some clients like to tan in their bikinis, shorts, undergarmets, or nothing at all.  We also have disposable clothes for clients to wear if they choose.

Can I wear makeup to my tanning session?

Yes, the tanner works through makeup.  And if the tanner gets in your hair, it easily washes out.

Will the tan rub off?

No.  However, there is a bronzer in the product that helps us apply the tan evenly.  This may rub off on clothes or sheets, but it is water-soluble and washes out easily.

How long does the tan last?

It lasts for 7 to 10 days, depending on your activities.  For example, if you swim in a chlorinated pool, the tan will not last as long.

What do you recommend to help extend the life of the tan?

We recommend not working out and heavily perspiring for 3 hours after the tan is applied.  Use a moisturizer and avoid exfoliating after your tan is applied.

Sometimes the tan will look darker on calloused areas, like elbows, feet, hands, fingers and knees.  How can that be avoided?

If that happens, we tell people to spray some Windex on a washcloth and rub it on the area, which blends the color nicely.  That way, there won’t be those darker areas where the product has settled.

Are there any extra precautions for clients who may have sensitive skin?

No, we have had no issues using this product.  We have used it here at What’s New for 5 years and it has been successful for all skin types.

After my tan, can I get out in the sun?

Yes, but it is important to note that our product does not have sunscreen, so make sure if you’re going outdoors for a day of sun, you wear sunscreen as you normally would.
